Mae Shults hypnotic and primal. touches the same parts of my brain as SWANS, but in a more affectionate way. Favorite track: Volition.
Nuno Lourenço

Nuno Lourenço Ritualistic and mystical bliss in form of music. I am awed and totally conquered by the sheer deepness of this album.
Hayduke X

Hayduke X Patience is a virtue. This deeply meditative album is worth your time and focus. Don't use Waning Hymns as background music. Give yourself to it, and it will consume you for 40+ minutes, and for eternity. And you want it to do just that. Favorite track: Volition.

🔥 This record speaks to me as a sort of journey into the primordial truths that one experiences through psychedelics, meditation or other methods of finding transcendent awareness. It is a recognition of the mental sicknesses that we are afflicted with as civilized beings—a call to deconstruct ourselves. The instrumentation here is layered like detritus in an old forest, rich, damp and feeding the roots of something ancient. Waning Hymns is stunning and a radiant highlight of 2020.

Advaita 11:38
What goes through The eyes Touch The mind Whats with this this Dualistic sickness Can we Transend Beyond the Opposites Sound the alarm They're thinking for themselves Cause if they saw Themselves in it all Then they might know Harmony Cause its Too easy To hate What we Can't Relate Whats with this this Dualistic sickness Can we Transcend Beyond the Opposites But the contrast is real And its how we feel To make sense of the world that surrounds But with no source to trust We get tricked and Submit Our lives To a fabricated future That has no chance To live What goes through The eyes Touch The mind

Volition 08:55
To want it all To want it all To want it all Access at our fingertips But its all in what we do with it We've never been so connected Yet loneliness Is this cultures Unseen disease Perhaps A side effect From too many screens Blurting illuminations Distracting from our present state While attention spans and Self worth Wane For better or worse We're stuck in this verse Of living in the age Of Information INFORMATION POWER, GREED, KNOWLEDGE CHOICE, CHOICE, CHOICE LOVE, LUST, COMPASSION CHOICE, CHOICE, CHOICE BUT ITS ALL IN WHAT YOU DO WITH IT ITS ALL IN HOW YOU DEAL WITH IT TIME TELLS ALL CHOICE, CHOICE, CHOICE

Century of the self Look out for no one else There's money to be made Selling individuality They want us to divide Pushed back behind another line The poor and weak must rise If we are to survive HOW MUCH MORE OF THIS HOW MUCH MORE OF THIS The mind Is like a seed Bigger yield The more love we give But what if our world has been built On false voices and dreams So we'd be reduced To wondering Happiness Consuming Machines Always in search for That next PERFECT THING So we work To buy To consume Then die Isolation is the key For this system To succeed Keeps us thinking Just about ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME Lets stop Going it alone Cause you are not number Yet We can out number The ones that issue The numbers Then we'll become Bigger than our Problems AS WITNESSING ADULTS WE HAVE THE POWER TO BREAK THE MOLD NOT A NUMBER NO I THINK WE'RE MORE THAN 2 WORKING HANDS I THINK WE'RE TIRED OF BEING BOUGHT AND SOLD AS WITNESSING ADULTS WE HAVE THE POWER TO BREAK THE MOLD NOT A NUMBER NO I THINK WE'RE TIRED OF BEING BOUGHT AND SOLD I KNOW WE'RE TIRED OF BEING BOUGHT AND SOLD SO BREAK!

about

Waning Hymns is a study of Western consumer culture, attention spans and empathy. This collection of ritualistic music asks us to redefine our self-worth. Using sonic and lyrical incantations, on “Advaita” we yell out, ‘…with no source to trust, we get tricked and submit, our lives, to a fabricated future, that has no chance,’ over chains on drums and thick tones. These Hymns are a ceremonial call, a reminder that we alone have the power to define ourselves.

Press Release:

Among the Pacific Northwest’s hidden societies, GEIST & THE SACRED ENSEMBLE forges a doom-inflected folk ritualism; dirges tinged with Eastern psychedelia and meandering meditative trances. For the last several years, the group has shown the Washington state underground a clear vision for their sound and lyrics creating a shamanistic space for the listener, placing them into a trance, then building up the excitement. The overarching theme of their lyrical work is that of an idealist, a yearning for an end to the modern human condition, for destruction of the constructs and constraints of oppression.

At their greatest, GEIST & THE SACRED ENSEMBLE’s tunes exist as an ever-changing pilgrimage, transforming their abstract drifts into apocalyptic folk hymns or private confessionals.

GEIST & THE SACRED ENSEMBLE has shared the stage with acts as diverse as Oranssi Pazuzui, Insect Ark, Soriah, Six Organs Of Admittance, Pedestrian Deposit, Yonatan Gat, Father Murphy, and Jackie-O-Motherfucker, and have appeared at Thirst For Light, Northwest Psych Fest, Missoula Psych Fest, PNW Folklife, Magma Fest, Dismal Fest and Escalator Fest. With tours from Maine to Virginia and California to Montana, their live shows are hypnotic and emotionally charged, often taking place at unique locations like a metal forge and foundry, forests and meadows, old schools, churches and more.

Press Quotes:

"...somewhere between Tribes of Neurot, Nick Cave and Swans at their most contemplative...Geist and his collaborators examine Western culture’s withering empathy and booming consumerism on their upcoming Waning Hymns LP. But Geist isn’t content to just observe and reprimand. Waning Hymns offers hope and understanding amid desolate soundscapes and turbulent times." - Decibel Magazine

"...brooding, hypnotic music that fans of any type of psychedelia should sink their ears into." - Brooklyn Vegan

"this isn’t an album for casual listening. These somber, enveloping sound baths exist to cause spiritual epiphanies and open obscure pathways within the individual. I can't recommend it on the basis of catchy leads and hard riffs—because in many ways, Waning Hymns directly contrasts with the concept of music as a consumable product. In that regard, the album is a solid victory against the frivolities of mainstream culture." - Metal Injection
